From Picnics to Fine Dining
Without Breaking the Bank - By Sabdra Berry
Los Cabos Magazine - Issue #20 - Summer 2009 - Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Mexico

One of the biggest reasons for visiting Los Cabos is the food. No, it’s not all tacos and beer. That’s not to say there aren’t some to-die-for taco stands here. There are more four-star restaurants in Los Cabos than any other resort destination of its size in México.

Dining out can be pricey, but even budget-minded travelers need not  skimp. Finding a bountiful meal is very doable on a budget, and you can visit and enjoy Los Cabos without spending a fortune.

While you probably won’t be able to order wine with every dinner, you can still sample some of Los Cabos’ renowned food without breaking the bank.

Plan ahead and travel off-season and/or during the week whenever possible. Rent an apartment or find an accommodation with a small kitchen.

That will allow you to prepare your own meals at a fraction of the price of what you’d pay at a restaurant and you can discover new-to-you ingredients at the local market. We are currently in the best months when it comes to savings. Off-season in Los Cabos generally runs from mid-June to October. Breakfast is included in bed-and-breakfast lodgings, as well as at some hotels. There’s a budget-saver right there. Otherwise, coffee shops have pastries and great coffee. Cabo San Lucas now has several coffee shops; so treat yourself to a mocha and a blueberry muffin. Consider rounding out your meals with small-change items like those to be had at Cabo’s many bakeries, pastry shops, and taco stands, and you can set most of your money aside for a single restaurant meal daily. You can potentially save hundreds of dollars without feeling like you’ve been cheated of any must-have resort dining experiences.

Lunch is the meal to splurge on. Head to a popular restaurant, where you can dine on specialty dishes but pay a fraction of the dinner prices. La Bodega Steak House in San José del Cabo offers a very reasonable three-course lunch menu from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There are also several noteworthy taco stands, including the venerable Gardenia’s. You haven’t lived until you’ve been to Gardenia’s. Nearly every tourist at one time or another hits Gardenia’s while in Cabo, and visitors return year after year for its affordable and fundamental menu of tacos made with fish, shrimp, chicken, beef, and even nopales (cactus—try it, you’ll like it!).

But the best deal for lunch might just be a picnic. Pick up your repast at Lenny’s Deli and eat alfresco on the beach. It’s a marvelous way to experience one of life’s greatest pleasures. Imagine savoring a hunk of bread, a piece of cheese, and a bottle of wine with your loved one, enjoying the open air, sitting on a sandy beach or the terrace of your condo. You’re relaxed, happy, and relishing the finer things in life.  Picnics are no longer limited to paper plates and finger foods. There are several first-rate catering services—such as Denni’s Catering or Lazy Gourmet—that can accommodate you, again without breaking the bank. Now you can have a four-star dining experience anywhere you wish: a boat, a secluded beach, or even your patio overlooking the marina. Not only do many picnic baskets contain full sets of plates, glasses, utensils, cloth napkins and tablecloths, and waterproof insulated coolers, you’ll also find such extras as salt and pepper shakers, detachable wine bottle coolers, mini cheese boards and knives, corkscrews, and decorative wine bottle stoppers. Picnic baskets are available for any style or budget.

For dinner, check out the menu at Amarone, one of the best Italian restaurants in Los Cabos. Located in Puerto Paraiso Mall, the restaurant boasts an amazing view from the outdoor eating area, where you can enjoy lunch or dinner and look out on the marina. Pastas are affordable, as are the appetizers, salads, and soups, and you can still take in the view or the jazz entertainment in the evening without exceeding your budget. You’ve probably heard of The Original Park Restaurant & Bar. It is famous for its huge lobster dishes, but you can go there and order from the appetizer menu and still enjoy great food. Lorenzillo’s has an oyster bar located right on the marina where you can dine for lunch or dinner by ordering a beautiful spinach salad or oysters on the half shell and bask in the moment of where you are–looking out at beautiful yachts and dining alfresco.

You can select some small plates to feast on at Solomon’s Landing, or the bar at Baja Cantina Dockside is probably the best deal in town with happy hour drink prices as well as small servings of fried calamari, tostadas, mini pizzas, and a bowl of chili or clam chowder. Go for the nachos at Pancho’s Restaurant, or any number of other Los Cabos’ eateries and enjoy the ambience, the camaraderie of friends and loved ones, and not feel the pinch in the wallet.

La Golondrina, with its twinkling lighted trees, is one of the most romantic dining spots in town. And because of its light menu options, you and your loved one don’t have to miss this fabulous opportunity. The best guacamole in town is made right in front of you at La Casa Country. That and a bowl of tortilla soup can be quite filling while you listen to country-style music. Afterward, try a bit of line dancing.

If you have minimized your eating costs during the day, you can opt to go to one of the more upscale eating spots for an evening of dining at none other than Sunset Da Mona Lisa, where you’ll be dazzled by the most beautiful sunset in Los Cabos (the restaurant overlooks the famous arch landmark).

Why spoil your long-awaited getaway vacation by spending it worrying about the finances? You’ve come to Los Cabos to enjoy yourself. With a little planning and consideration to your dining budget, you can still enjoy your vacation without breaking the bank. You’ll remember your stay in Los Cabos with fond memories without feeling guilty. It’s a great place to vacation even if you’re watching the pennies. With a little common sense about budgeting, you’ll feel better about returning soon and often.
