Land Activities

Looking for an action-packed vacation? Take advantage of Los Cabos’ near-limitless array of adrenaline-pumping outdoor adventures that will have you soaring to new heights, zipping through the desert, and discovering a whole new side of the Baja.

Given the relatively small amount of space that the area known as Los Cabos occupies at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, it’s surprising to many visitors, and locals for that matter, to find the innumerable outdoor activities that are offered here.

Yes, the mind boggles at the thought of being able to choose from either the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Cortés for water-centered activities in the same destination, but the mention of the countless expeditions and tours on land alone can really cause one to feel overwhelmed.

But that’s a good thing. While on vacation here, explore the nearly infinite options that will introduce you to the Baja desert, plus the wildlife within it, at its best, all under the constantly shining sun. Be it on your own or as part of a clan of people, on foot, in a car, or dangling from the clear blue sky above, the list of unique outdoor adventures that await you is as long as the peninsula itself.

Some of the activities allow you to move at your own pace, while others rely strictly on the principles of gravity. Play it safe by going slowly, or take the risks you’ve always dreamed of and live on the edge in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Baja's Activities has a nice variety of things to do and allows visitors to choose from locations in San José del Cabo, the East Cape, Cabo San Lucas, and Migriño, an area just outside Cabo. The San José horseback riding tour offers the natural estuary as a backdrop on a one- or two-hour tour.

Enjoy a sunset near the beach and the flora and fauna that make the estuary home as you meander around at a relaxed pace. If the animal mode of transportation doesn’t appeal to you and the group, another great “open-air” option would be scooter rentals in Cabo. It’s a great way to see the sights and more fun, perhaps, than renting a traditional car.

For a bit more speed, opt for the East Cape all-terrain vehicle (ATV) tour, where dry river beds and dunes near Punta Gorda will surely give some insight into the real Baja. As part of the Migriño ATV tour, both the desert and the Pacific Ocean settings will make this rugged adventure something truly beautiful. During the few months of whale season, keep your eyes peeled for these magnificent creatures as you cruise along the Pacific shore. For ATV and horseback riding tours, Baja’s Activities provides free, round-trip transportation for its guests. www.bajasactivities.com, (624) 143-2050.

The people at Cabo Adventures have a list of things to do that is so complete, you may need to stay a bit longer to try everything on it. Although the programs offered at the group’s Cabo Dolphins may include getting wet, technically, you are still on land while doing it, so we’ll let that detail slide. Swim with Pacific bottlenose dolphins as part of a package that includes a 30-minute swim, plus educational information on the behavior and anatomy of these intelligent creatures.

Cabo Dolphins also has a trainer-for-a-day program, in which guests can learn about the mammals, help feed them, and even assist the professional trainers during the other dolphin programs throughout the day, both in the pool and poolside. For those wishing to observe the dolphins while remaining fairly dry, step into the shallow end of the pool for the dolphin encounter, where trained staff members will teach you the signals the dolphins use and show you how to feed them.

A much more rugged excursion offered by Cabo Adventures is the desert safari tour, which puts you in the seat of a Mercedes-Benz Unimog ATV for a trek through the Baja desert. Complete with knowledgeable guides, this four-hour outing includes a walking tour through desert settings near the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, rich with wildlife and native vegetation, and a tequila tasting as you head back to Los Cabos, passing beautiful scenery along the way.

As part of its canopy tour adventure, set amid the UNESCO-protected Boca de Sierra National Park, Cabo Adventures allows guests to partake in the wildly fun zip lines that stretch across wide canyons in the middle of the desert. This five-hour adventure is all about having fun, and in addition to the zip lines, the locale comes complete with a Tarzan swing, Commando bridge, and rappel wall, and transportation is provided to and from the site. Safety comes first here, too, so rest assured, knowing you’re in the hands of trained staff with the latest in safety gear. www.cabo-adventures.com, (624) 173-9500.

Cabo Karting Center, of Baja Wide Open, gives wannabe professional racecar drivers the chance to practice on an outdoor track just outside Cabo that is surrounded by the cacti Baja is known for. Not the typical neighborhood go-karts, the Stratos SK-GS-06 karts available at Cabo Karting Center can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour and are designed with both performance and safety in mind. As part of this activity, each driver is given a rules and instructions briefing, plus necessary safety equipment and a computer-generated printout of your lap times. Race along the track alone, or challenge your trash-talking buddies to some good old Cabo Karting Center competition. www.cabokartingcenter.com, (624) 144-7073.

Providing you with yet another opportunity to release your inner wild child while in Los Cabos is Canopy Costa Azul. Home to an impressive three miles of different zip cables, this site just outside San José del Cabo will have you smiling and screaming with glee as you glide above trails and dry river beds, all while admiring the vistas of the Sea of Cortés. www.canopycostaazul.com, (624) 105-9311.

Desertica Cabo Multi-Adventure Park has plenty of nature-centered activities from which to choose: walking, biking, driving, zipping, and horseback riding. It all begins in the ghost town created specifically for Desertica’s guests. On the property, guests will enjoy the shade of a large palapa, a swimming pool, medical facilities, and the facades of a bank and small chapel, perfect for photo opportunities with friends and family. Air-conditioned transportation to and from the remote area near the Sierra de la Laguna Mountain, the site of the company’s excursions, is provided. The desert safari tour includes stops in Miraflores, Santiago, and the natural waterfalls nearby. Take in the desert around you from the ATV that serves as your rugged transportation for the day. Sign up for the ultimate in extreme tours and let Desertica’s 16 zip lines and Tarzan swing get your adrenaline pumping.

For the past seven years, SkyDive El Sol has been offering those who want to live on the edge a chance to do so from high above Cabo San Lucas and the famed monument, the Arch. Run by a group of United States Parachute Association–certified divers, SkyDive El Sol has tapped into a previously untouched market in Los Cabos and guarantees an absolute outdoor thrill. After a 10-minute instruction course, free-fall in tandem for one whole minute 13,000 feet above El Arco, and take in the magnificence that is Los Cabos as you gently make your way back down to the soft sands of Médano Beach. Those with real guts might opt to partake in SkyDive El Sol’s accelerated free-fall program. www.skydiveelsol.com, (624) 129-7173.

Introducing visitors to the magic and mystery within the arid Los Cabos soil is what these tour companies do best. Some do it close to the ground, while others prefer to capture the beauty from a bit higher. Choose from the myriad options they offer and soak up their expertise about the area along with a healthy dose of Baja sunshine. Keep in mind that many activities have age and weight restrictions, so check with each company before booking. The two resort towns that make up Los Cabos may seem small, but the variety of land-based activities offered by each is anything but!
