September 15th. Mexican Independence Day
For almost 300 years, from the time of the Spanish Conquest in 1521 until 1810, the Spanish, with a brief French interlude of several years, ruled México. The instability of Spain, and the weakness of Napoleon’s appointed ruler of México, Emperor Maximilian, gave opportunity to independence-minded people in México. On the night of September 15th 1810, Padre Miguel Hidalgo gave a sermon, now called the “Grito de Independencia,” rang the Dolores Hidalgo church bells, and cried, “¡Viva México! ¡Viva la Independencia!” Thus began the Mexican fight for freedom. Since then, across México on the eve of September 16th, Mexicans come together in their town plazas where, in the midst of colorful banners, flags, and paper machê flowers, they listen to speeches by politicians until the presidente municipal (the mayor) arrives to give the “Grito de Independencia,” beginning with a shout of “¡Viva México! ¡Viva la Independencia!” The crowds echo the call in exuberant shouts for revolution. With people blowing horns, whistles, tossing confetti, red, white and green streamers, and setting off firecrackers, skyrockets ablaze in the night-sky above, there’s no question that something very special is happening. Bands play and everyone dances. You can join in the festivities held in front of every municipal palace in México. Ceremonies and celebrations will be in both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo on the evening of September 15th. The next day there will be parades, more Mariachi bands, family picnics, dancing, political speeches, and assorted revelry throughout Los Cabos and of México. No one works that day. Or perhaps the next for that matter.

Health & Wellness
OOWWWWW!
Common sense should be part of your vacation game. Los Cabos’ beaches are famous for clean sand, pure seawaters and roiling broiling midday sun. It’s no wonder palm covered palapas and bamboo covered pergolas for shelter from el sol are found on almost every beach. Even in the shade, reflection from the water, and even overcast days, are to be regarded as sun hazards as well. Re-hydrate yourself out of the sun with gallons of water or ice tea. Gatorade and Pedialyte help re-hydration and are good sources of electrolytes. Doc says, “nix on the margaritas and beer” for re-hydration. Alcohol is not a good solution.
Baseball caps protect only about 25% of your head. Sombreros and lifeguard hats cover more territory. For something more stylish, Cabo Hats has a great selection of colorful and smart lids that will serve you well, some even made with built-in sun protection fabrics. Sunglasses are a must not only for a fashion statement but also as protection for your eyes. Sunglass Island has just about every type and maker of sunglasses available. Check labels for specific protective features of the glasses before you buy.
Professionals recommend lotions of SPF 30 or more and there are many great cosmetics cum sunburn protective lotions with SPF counts as part of their formula. The La Prairie line, available exclusively at Ultrafemme, just next to Lorenzillo’s restaurant, features several products in their Sun-Kissed Collection including a cellular self-tan for face and body, an anti-wrinkle sun cream, and a Luxe lip treatment with SPF 15. Also available at Ultrafemme, Dior’s collection of various self-tanning and bronzing creams, ranging from SPF 15 to SPF 30. Several well known brands offer lines of fine cosmetic products. Dr. Felisa Lebrero, of Face and More in Cabo San Lucas, recommends several sun care products designed for prolonged use, including a mineral 100% chemical-free lotion and a moisturizing lipstick that helps repair sun and dehydrating damage. Both of these establishments also have wonderful post-sunning lotions and creams that will rejuvenate and help soothe damaged skin.
Signs and symptoms of sunburn usually appear within a few hours of exposure. If you happen to use less-than-common sense and end up with a wicked sunburn at the end of the day, the following is a sunburn-relief recipe and regimen from the respected minds at the Mayo Clinic.
For “Lobster” Sunburn Relief:
• Apply wet towels with cool tap water or take a cool bath. Adding 1/2 cup (about 120 milliliters) of cornstarch, oatmeal or baking soda to your bath water may provide some relief.
• Applying a pure aloe or an aloe vera lotion several times a day, or 1% hydrocortisone cream may ease pain as well. Do not use petroleum jelly, butter or other home remedies on your sunburn. They can prevent or delay healing.
• Leave blisters intact to speed healing and avoid infection. If they burst on their own, apply an antibacterial ointment to the open areas. Your body needs the fluids. Let it peel naturally.
• If needed, take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Aleve) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Don't give children or teenagers aspirin. It has been shown to cause Reye's syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal disease. Medications with the word “-caine” in them, as in Benzocaine, can cause skin irritation.ß• On Juded its debt payments to the French, British and Spanish. America was in the midst of a civil war, and France’s Napoleon III, bent on worldwide conquest, invaded Mexico with his sights on joining forces with the U.S. Confederacy and dividing up the U.S.A.
Napoleon sent a 6,000-man army equipped with the latest military weaponry to Puebla, 100 miles north of Mexico City. The French, though having not lost a battle in 50 years, were overcome by the local militia of 4,000 Mestizos and Zapotec Indians, armed with antiquated muskets and machetes, and commanded by a young inexperienced Mexican general, Ignacio Zaragoza.
The French returned a year later and seized Mexico City, installing Austria’s Maximilian as Emperor. Mexican President Benito Juarez fled to Washington D.C. to run his government in exile. Lincoln was unable to provide overt aid to Mexico for political reasons. However, U.S. Army General Sherman later reported he “misplaced 30,000 rifles near the Mexican border” that mysteriously ended up in the hands of the beleaguered Mexican army. Emperor Maximilian and his wife Carlotta met their fate being captured and executed by firing squad.
The Battle of Puebla on May 5th 1862 proved that the young Mexico could resist invading foreign armies. Mexico’s defiance provided inspiration to people throughout Latin America as they struggled for their freedom from colonial rule. Cinco de Mayo was a rather minor battle, but its significance is celebrated with fervent patriotic significance.
