MEXICAN CELEBRATIONS
Day of the Dead Día de Muertos
The origins of Day of the Dead celebrations in México can be traced back to indigenous peoples, such as the Aztec and Maya. November 1st honors deceased children and infants, whereas deceased adults are honored on November 2nd. Día de Muertos is a celebration, not of death, but of the continuum of life and is characterized by humor and joy. Many people build altars in their homes, offices or restaurants, incorporating a Christian Cross, images of the Virgin Mary, candles, pictures of deceased relatives, as well as their favorite food and drink. Altar contests are popular events in Los Cabos and reflect the Mexican heritage.
Nativity Scene
In México, it is traditional to build the nativity scene on December 16, the day of the first Posada. Traditionally, the scene is completed as time goes by. Baby Jesus is not added until December 24. The Three Wise Men are not included in the nativity scene until January 6, Three Kings’ Day. The nativity scene is traditionally not taken down until February 2, Candlemas, the day which marks the end of the Epiphany season. You’ll see nativity scenes in restaurants, public offices and plazas, or you can add Mexican spirit to your Christmas decoration and make one for your home.
Buñuelos
Add un toque mexicano (a Mexican touch) to your Christmas celebrations with this simple yet traditional recipe for buñuelos, sugared fried tortillas.
• 1 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
• 12 flour tortillas • 1/2 cup corn oil • 1 tsp cinnamon
Slice each tortilla into eight wedges. Heat oil in skillet over high heat. Fry tortilla wedges until crisp. Drain on paper towels. On flat plate, mix sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Coat tortilla wedges with sugar mixture. Serve warm or cool. Serves 1012. Recipe courtesy: Cooking with Baja Magic Dos by Ann Hazard.
