Traditional Thanksgiving Dinners and Where to Find Them

Many Americans think Thanksgiving is only celebrated in the U.S. because of the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving in 1621. But this autumn holiday is celebrated in many countries and for basically the same reasons: to give thanks for what one has and the bounty of the previous year. Spending time with families and eating large dinners are the norm. Add watching football, and you have the makings of a perfect Thanksgiving dinner, whether at home or in a restaurant.

Even though Los Cabos has a large Canadian populace, and they celebrate Thanksgiving the second Monday in October rather privately, Thanksgiving in Los Cabos is celebrated the same as in the United States, the fourth Thursday in November. Thanksgiving is not a national holiday in México, but Mexicans enjoy the feast associated with the day.

Enjoying pavo (turkey) is quite common, especially in tourist areas such as Los Cabos. In fact, wild turkey is native to, and was domesticated in México. There are a number of restaurants that won't disappoint you come "turkey day." A long-time favorite since 1992 is La Golondrina, where, while dining under twinkling lights alfresco, the roasted bird comes with all the trimmings served buffet-style. Due to a huge demand, those seeking a little different fare may order lobster, shrimp, steaks and even Mexican food. Poblano chili corn chowder, sweet potatoes with roasted chili pecans, and bread pudding are the big draw. Many visitors make their reservations while dining on Thanksgiving Day for the following year's celebration.

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated at both Baja Cantina locations, either Dockside or the Beach Grill, each with outstanding views. Besides the traditional stuffed turkey with all the trimmings, they also offer a shrimp and filet mignon combo or fettuccini. At Sunset Da Mona Lisa, Italian Chef Emanuele Olivero always puts his special autumn touch into his Thanksgiving dishes, such as pasta with seafood and pumpkin sauce, ravioli with sweet potato filling, and sweet corn muffins with cranberry compote.

Peacock's Restaurant has continued the traditional Thanksgiving feast for 15 years, with an innovative Mediterranean touch. The owners of The Original Park Restaurant pride themselves on that fact that they've been serving the traditional Thanksgiving dinner for 22 years. Their plated turkey dinners come with homemade cranberry sauce, while their full board menu of seafood, steaks and Mexican food is also available. For many, the Latitude 22 Roadhouse is a favorite. Everyone raves about the delicious food at reasonable prices.

Some say that Habanero's in San José del Cabo has the absolute best stuffing in the world, and Solomon's Landing has turkey stuffed with wild rice, served with melt-in-your-mouth candied yams with pecans, and garlic mashed potatoes.

Who says the traditional Thanks-giving menu is set in stone? There are so many variations to how the turkey is prepared, whether the bird is stuffed or dressing offered on the side, and every locale has its take on cranberry sauce, not to mention desserts. While in Los Cabos, take your pick of any of these home-away-from-home offerings and enjoy the feast. Reservations are necessary wherever you go.
