México has a long tradition of outdoor lighting for the holidays. All over México on Christmas Eve, candles light a path to the door and bring a warm welcome to friends and family. These luminaries are usually candles enclosed in a paper bag weighted with sand. You can expand on this tradition by decorating your garden. If you're lucky enough to have a cactus in your yard, a whimsical touch sure to please is decorating it with lights. Using light tubes rather than individual bulbs is safer for you and the cactus. Stocked by all the 'big box' retailers and home improvement stores, you'll do well to buy early, as this is a popular decoration and other holiday supplies may not last long.
In recent years NAFTA has allowed traditional pine trees to be imported and you'll find them all over the Los Cabos area. Local interior designers often play on the beach theme, hanging beautiful seashells instead of more traditional ornaments. At Plaza Puerto Paraíso you'll find plenty of inspiring designs. The trinket stores in the tourist districts of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are also great sources of traditional Mexican decorations, right down to the serape to use as a tree skirt.
If you want to really get the feel of a Mexican Christmas, take a break from the usual tourist spots. A quick walk up any of the side streets and you'll find little papelerías, or stationers, who offer decorating supplies with a Mexican theme. And don't overlook the one touch every party needs: the Santa Claus piñata. The traditional round piñata with the seven horns also makes a great holiday ornament, even if your party won't include bat-wielding toddlers anxious for the treats inside. If space permits, piñatas are stunning in groups. Piñatas are sold in locations all over Los Cabos; if you're unsure where to find them, check out Morelos street in Cabo San Lucas, where you'll find them in every description and color only a few blocks from the main drag.
Your friends and family are sure to love celebrating the holidays with you here in Los Cabos. With a little creativity, you'll find that you can make your home festive and memorable as well.
