Cabo-Style Gifts for Everyone on Your List

An essential part of celebrating Christmas is the Christmas stocking. Every culture has its own version of how the tradition of filling stockings started. Visitors to Los Cabos wanting to keep the tradition going may not want to be burdened with bringing gifts when traveling. Luckily, they can be assured that gifts can be purchased upon arrival, while still keeping the traditional Christmas spirit.

Originally, children simply used one of their everyday socks, but eventually special stockings were created for this purpose. One traditional practice dictates that five gifts stimulating each of the five senses be included, for example: something to eat, like candy or fruit; a toy or other item that makes a noise (this can include nuts to crack); a visually pleasing item like jewelry, cuff links, or a coloring book; something that has a tangible appeal such as modeling clay, a soft toy, or lingerie; and any item with a distinctive scent such as bubble bath, cologne, or perfume.

Not only do children enjoy seeing the goodies in their stockings, adults enjoy the suspense as well. This would be the perfect time for a suitor to announce his intentions by discreetly placing a diamond engagement ring in his intended's stocking for the big surprise on Christmas Eve or morning. If the ring has not yet been purchased, UltraJewels, located along the marina, or Diamonds International, with several locations throughout Los Cabos, are must-stops prior to the big day. These are also ideal shops if the recipient might want to surprise her beau with a beautiful set of cuff links.

Spend an afternoon at Plaza Puerto Paraíso and you'll find everything you need to delight everyone in the family. México prides itself in handmade toys for children, from the traditionally dressed Mexican dolls, to hand-crafted tops and puppets. Fonart 100% México, on the lower level, carries articles made by the masters throughout México, many small enough to tuck into a stocking. For example, a slender straw container for the traveler to hold a toothbrush is a unique remembrance of México, while clay figures, tiny bells, and colorfully decorated magnets and candles make wonderful souvenirs. What woman wouldn't want to find freshwater pearl earrings in her stocking from Seaduction, the shop specializing in seashell accessories and decorative items, located directly across from Fonart 100% México. The Cotton Club has small soaps made in México City of intriguing aromas such as chocolate and watermelon, just the right size for stocking stuffing.

A very unique shop called Baja Body Deli, located in the heart of Cabo San Lucas on Matamoros near Lázaro Cárdenas, also features handmade soaps, plus bed wear, and spa products. Their locally made Damiana tea is known for its aphrodisiac and blood pressure lowering properties. Surely there's someone on your list in need of these items! Many handmade Mexican crafts can be found from the vendors on the beach, or any trinket shop around town, but the Marina Mercado Arts and Crafts Market at the marina has absolutely everything Mexican. Don't forget dad with a nice bottle of wine from Tutto Bene, or a Cuban cigar from Fidel's Cigar Shop in San José del Cabo. Another merchant to be sure to visit is UltraFemme, where you'll find a huge array of perfumes and cosmetics, just the right size to slip into your favorite lady's stocking.

We've come a long way from the Dutch tradition of putting out wooden clogs full of straw for Santa's reindeer. Don't break this fun tradition enjoyed by the entire family while on vacation. Bring the stockings, and go shopping, making this year a new tradition!
