The foods we all turn to for happiness and security, or even to reminisce about childhood, cannot truly be defined; nor can they be expected to remain the same from culture to culture. Luckily, due to Los Cabos' geographical location and diverse population of its residents, we find not only comfort foods from all over México, such as enchiladas, rice, and beans, but those from other countries as well. This special characteristic means that Los Cabos restaurants are sure to have something that makes all of us feel warm and fuzzy, whole and satisfied. Traditional American meals are abundant as festive days approach, but venture out and try those from México as well, like pozole (a spicy meat stew with hominy), bacalao (Christmas cod), and buñuelos (deep-fried dough covered in a sweet syrup and sprinkled with sugar). Although the weather here may not change drastically during the seasons, the special sauces and spices used in food in Los Cabos vary greatly throughout the year. Comfort food can be a snack, a dessert, or an entire meal, but one thing is certain: in Los Cabos, it is guaranteed to be good!
MEXICAN TRADITIONS
Baja Cantina Dockside
Baja Cantina Dockside is obviously one of the best people watching locations in all of Los Cabos. The casual open-air environment is comfortable and refreshing, with impressive yacht views. The Baja fisherman ambience lingers refreshingly beneath the enormous palapa-thatched roof. A local hangout, the Baja Cantina Dockside is also invitingly fascinating for tourists, who are drawn to the unique personality and undeniable celebratory character of the entire establishment. Wireless Internet access provides a great place for checking email or getting some work done during the day. The bar itself offers bargains unlike anywhere else in Cabo San Lucas. The restaurant menu offers a wide selection of comfort food, including fresh fish and shrimp, cooked using many different methods including a la Veracruzana, al mojo de ajo, a la diabla, blackened, lemon pepper, and fried. The scrumptious pizza selections are just as diverse. The Mexican specialty dishes provide a homemade authentic flavor, which permeates like an invigorating marina breeze throughout the restaurant. Baja Cantina Dockside is situated in front of L-M Dock, at the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Dinner entrées range from $11 to $45 U.S. for the lobster. The restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with seating capacity for 100, and groups up to 150. For reservations and groups, call (624) 143-1591.--M.D.
Don Emiliano
Set within a tranquil garden patio in the heart of San José del Cabo, Don Emiliano serves haute Mexican cuisine like no other restaurant in Baja. Executive Chef Margarita Carrillo de Salinas is one of the most recognized chefs in Mexico and during the 30 years of her career she's earned a national and international reputation promoting traditional Mexican gastronomy. At Don Emiliano she has materialized a dream of expressing her family's tradition that through generations revolved around the kitchen and the vast culinary culture of Mexico. The ever-changing menu is the perfect reflection of her gastronomic passion and talent. Try the exquisitely elaborated Pescado Tikin-Xic--Yucatán-style catch of the day in achiote sauce, wrapped in banana leaves. For dessert, the grilled mangoes, filled with spices and nuts bathed in a lavish orange juice reduction, are nothing short of perfection. November is the month of celebration at Don Emiliano, marked by the festivities of Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead), so don't miss the special menu featuring tamales, atole, and other countless regional specialties. Don Emiliano's second location opened earlier this year in Tokyo, Japan, but in case that seems too far away, enjoy the same exquisite culinary experience, superb service and quaint welcoming atmosphere right here in Los Cabos. El Comal
Built with the goal of recreating meals from Grandmother's kitchen, El Comal strives, and succeeds, in offering customers classic Mexican food without all the fanfare. Before even looking at the handmade menus containing homemade items, it's evident that attention is paid to every detail. Situated in what was the patio of the eleventh house built in San José del Cabo, El Comal's history is as rich as its food. The alfresco dining area and bar are surrounded by ancient trees dating back to the city's founding, with a variety of custom-made, blown glass lights illuminating them. Local Chef José Amador prepares the best cochinita pibil (spicy-sweet shredded pork) in the area. Try it on appetizers like sopes or go for the Gorditas de Frijol Negro (fried patties of mashed black beans covered in cheese). For hardy eaters, the Filete de Res Entomatado is mandatory. Chunks of beef smothered in a tomatillo sauce, served with mashed potatoes and zucchini. The Pesca Especial is a perfectly seared sea bass covered in a mango glaze. Jazmin's Restaurant
Succumb to the desire to experience and enjoy everything Mexican at Jazmin's Restaurant, located in downtown San José. From the moment one steps into this casual, air-conditioned establishment, there's no question that whatever you order will be 100% authentic Mexican fare. Surrounding the brightly-colored clothed tables is a variety of historic photos of pistol-wielding, pulque- (strong homemade Mexican liquor) drinking Mexican men, while decorative flags cover the length of the restaurant's ceiling. Jazmin's oversized bowl of chunky tortilla soup prepares the palate for the delectable entrées to choose from. Ranging from $10 to $23 U.S., there's something for everyone here. La Casa Del Pozo
Established in Cabo more than four years ago, La Casa Del Pozo (the water well house) is steeped not only in rich gastronomy, but rich history as well. Situated across from Marina Sol, a few blocks from Médano Beach, this casual restaurant's focal point is the fresh water well, the first in Cabo, remodeled but still standing after hundreds of years. The courtyard setting is perfect for enjoying breezy evenings under the 200-year old Indian trees while sipping fine tequila with a meal. The tequila offered at La Casa Del Pozo is made in Guadalajara, Jalisco, exclusively for the restaurant. Menu items here are no less spectacular, as they are 100% original recipes. From the chef's stuffed chicken, filled with shrimp and broccoli and smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce, to the fish and shrimp, each offered with a myriad of sauces such as mango, Damiana, or garlic and butter, hungry guests will find it difficult to choose just one entrée. Enjoy a complimentary shot of Damiana in a souvenir clay mug, along with a moist, scented towel after the meal. Lunch prices start at less than $10 U.S. and dinner entrées range $20-30 U.S. Open daily 1:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Reservations recommended. Call (624) 143-6569.--K.F.
La Fonda
La Fonda was created with one mission in mind: to offer an extensive array of 100% authentic Mexican food in a casual atmosphere at reasonable prices. Mission accomplished. Located several blocks away from the tourist zone, on Miguel Hidalgo between Obregon and 12 de Octubre, it is obvious that this restaurant compromises nothing in offering a complete Mexican experience, both visually and gastronomically. The air-conditioned interior resembles a small, familial hacienda, which is exactly what it is. Chef/Owner Christopher Chong and family serve up a variety of original recipes via their meat-filled tacos, tortas, and tostadas, as well as the exotic, pre-Hispanic appetizers like ant eggs, grasshoppers, and maguey worms. The Tacos Locos (crazy tacos) are covered with mashed potatoes, shrimp, corn, chicken, and tomato sauce and the chicken in mole sauce has just the right amount of kick. Customers may also select the very rare Kobe Rib Eye Roll Cut, a unique cut coming from cattle raised on beer / tequila and massaged to ensure tender beef. Main courses go for between $11 and $55 U.S. for the Kobe beef. A selection of tequila is available, which is made exclusively for La Fonda, and the flavored waters, such as watermelon, cantaloupe, and horchata are out of this world. Kids can choose from approximately seven different entrées on a menu just for them. Open daily 1:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Seats 86. Call, (624) 143-6926.--K.F.
La Panga Antigua Cabo San Lucas
For a gastronomic excursion along México's coastal regions without leaving town, sample the fare in the breathtaking courtyard of this beautiful establishment. And if you have a yearning for seafood, it doesn't get any better than this. Many corporate event planners take advantage of the seating for 450 and private balcony seating for 150. Starters include a delightful concoction of scallops and huitlacoche (corn fungus) spread on a crispy tortilla made at the tortilla station in the main dining room. Seafood soup is chock full of seafood, and the butterflied whole red snapper is a feast beautifully presented on a wooden fish-shaped plank. Mexican dishes prepared with seafood are well represented: shrimp enchiladas, shrimp or fish tacos Ensenada-style, and northern Baja-style lobster served with black beans. For grill lovers, try the Sonora steak with spicy shrimp. Authentic Mexican cuisine is represented in the chiles rellenos, chicken mole, beef tips in chipotle, green or red enchiladas, and carne asada Tampiqueña. Mi Casa
With its central location, across from the town square in downtown Cabo, Mi Casa is the epitome of a great Mexican restaurant. Seeing its electric blue façade and neon sign, however, it becomes obvious that it is much more than that. This boutique restaurant has been pleasing demanding palates for 14 years, continuing to expand and add quality items to both its interior and the already outstanding menu. The unique experience begins right from the entrance, with Mi Casa's small store, where frames, artwork, blown glass, and other Mexican décor can be purchased. Life-size murals adorn nearly every wall in the restaurant and one-of-a-kind national art is found throughout. Mi Casa's noteworthy ambiance is second only to its varied menu, which reaches beyond everyday Mexican food, instead highlighting dishes rarely found in the area. Included are Chiles en Nogada, meat-filled chilies covered in sweet walnut cream sauce and pomegranates, cochinita pibil, pork roasted in achiote, and Manchamanteles de Morelia, fruit-infused mole sauce over roasted chicken and pork. His cooking schools bring wannabe chefs for sell-out classes, while the new tequila room accommodates up to 16 for tequila tastings. Pancho's boasts having the largest collection of tequila with 575 varieties. Solomon's Landing
Solomon's Landing offers outstanding food and unprecedented attention to every detail. The vibrant, festive ambience with a magnificent view of yachts provides comfort, and the Mexican cuisine and seafood are wonderful. The Mexican combo is delicious, consisting of a wonderful mix of comfort foods such as chile relleno, chicken enchiladas in red sauce, fried fajitas served with rice pilaf, black beans and guacamole. The fresh sweet Pacific red lobster is phenomenal, steamed to succulent perfection and then seared in butter like no other restaurant knows how. The pastas are also amazing, and as far as a diverse menu with virtually limitless options, Solomon's Landing is one of the best. Whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it will be hard to find a better place to deliver great family style food with a comfortable and inviting attitude that exudes from every dimension of Solomon's Landing. Terranova Restaurant
The escalating presence of upscale restaurants around Los Cabos has made it increasingly easy to lose sight of the many other, more inconspicuous and unpretentious dining experiences. At the Terranova Restaurant, situated inside a quaint posada, the authentic Mexican food is to die for, and the unassuming terrace offers a romantic garden setting reminiscent of a small colonial Mexican village. This restaurant is the preeminent breakfast meeting spot for local politicians, Mexicans, and Gringos in the know. The Mexican combination plate is an eclectic collection of delicious traditional dishes. These comfort food selections create a masterful fusion of samples by using quesadillas, chiles rellenos, chicken enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, and tacos dorados. I finally decided upon the shrimp steak, which consisted of six very large shrimp sitting alongside a steaming baked potato and a warm bed of fresh mixed vegetables. The extensive menu offers many scrumptious selections such as coconut mango shrimp, and the delicious homemade desserts are certainly worth saving room for. Terranova Restaurant offers a full bar and has a seating capacity for 72, including two air-conditioned dining rooms. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Degollado between Zaragoza and Doblado in downtown San José del Cabo. Dinner entrées range from $12 to $25 U.S. For reservations call (624) 142-0534.--M.D.
Trinidad
Named after Trinidad Arteaga, mother of 10 children, all in the restaurant business, Trinidad Restaurant is the newest offshoot of the family that made Nick-San so famous in Los Cabos. Trinidad offers an exciting blend of Mrs. Arteaga's secret ingredients of traditional old México. "Sabor," meaning taste or flavor, is well represented at Trinidad. Strange names dot the menu: Coyoacán-style Tostadas, a recipe from one of the oldest neighborhoods of México City; Huarache, a flat tortilla with various toppings that looks like the traditional Mexican leather sandal; Pambazo, bread-stuffed with chicken or beef, dipped in red guajillo pepper sauce. Pozole, a traditional pre-Columbian stew made with hominy, is especially popular during holidays. Seafood includes red snapper, octopus in almond sauce, and lobster Baja California-style. Delight in the sea breezes of Pitahayas' exterior as you ponder waves colliding with rock formations in the Sea of Cortés below. Complimentary breads with real sausage, bacon, or jalapeños are a nice start. Later, tempt your taste buds with the Ahi Tuna Trio, prepared three ways, or Coconut Shrimp, jumbo with chipotle and a passion fruit glaze. Continue with a main dish like Catch of the Day, drenched in garlic and butter, topped with a sweet relish. Those who want options without having to sacrifice will no doubt select the Seafood Trilogy--lobster tail in a vanilla bean sauce, two jumbo shrimp in butter sauce, and grilled fish adorned with sweet salsa.
