Golf in Los Cabos through the eyes of local expert Federico Vaughan

Given that Los Cabos has become one of the top golf destinations in the world, and arguably the top spot in all of Latin America, this begs the question: how has this relatively small resort area done what large cities still strive to achieve?

To get an insider's perspective about the latest in golf news, we went to the Corporate Director of Grupo Questro's Golf Division, Federico Vaughan, who has played every course in the area. In considering both golf and the growth of Los Cabos, for they are inseparable, Federico Vaughan predicts nothing but great variety and continued expansion for the area.

To the delight of golfers everywhere, he reflects, "The good thing about Cabo is, with so much competition in development, it forces you (architects and designers) to have good quality, and there's enough of a market for everyone to do well here." This fact is evident when we look at Grupo Questro's continued expansion.

Campestre San José Golf Club, Questro's newest course, opened in July 2007, to overwhelmingly positive reviews. The success of this 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature course is due, in part, to the implementation of Paspalum turf grass, according to Vaughan. Paspalum is a great alternative to Bermuda grass due to its tolerance for salt and saline grey water, making it the ideal turf grass for Los Cabos' desert courses.

Two other projects on the horizon include Puerto Los Cabos and Chileno Bay, each containing two signature courses. Puerto Los Cabos, another Questro gem, will offer a public 18-hole Nicklaus design, along with a private 18-hole Greg Norman course. The initial course, opening in October, will be a surprising combination of 9 Nicklaus/ 9 Norman course. The first of the two private Tom Fazio designed courses coming this way via Chileno Bay Club will be open in Fall 2008.

In addition to the new courses, it is important to remember that the core of Los Cabos' impeccable reputation for golf options is also based on well-established, prestigious courses such as Cabo San Lucas Country Club, El Dorado, Cabo Del Sol, Palmilla and Cabo Real, which is considered by many to be the most challenging of the area's courses. Combining the latest trends and designs with Los Cabos' already fabulous, world renowned designer courses, it's no wonder our area continues to dominate the texts of golf magazines and conversations all over the globe.
