The only people that can authenticate a real diamond are certified gemologists specializing in jewelry. However, if you want to quickly assess or determine whether a stone is authentic, here are a few basic pointers. Diamonds refract so much light that they will not work as a magnifying glass; therefore, you cannot read print through them. If you shine a small light through the stone and cannot see it on the other side, but only a bright halo around the rim, it is most likely a true diamond. Diamonds are very good at conducting heat. Breathe on the surface of the stone and immediately check to see if it has fogged up. You shouldn’t be able to see any moisture on a true diamond. Common sense can prevent you from purchasing a stone that is something other than a diamond. It shouldn’t be ridiculously inexpensive. You get what you pay for.

Pearls are more difficult to authenticate, but the most common is the tooth test: Rub the pearl lightly along the biting edge of your upper front tooth. If it is gritty or sandy, it’s most likely a cultured or natural pearl.
