Los Cabos Magazine - Issue #12 - Spring 2007 - Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Mexico

Rodrigo Uribe, the golf pro at Cabo Real Golf Club, is a man who loves golf. He has been golfing since the age of seven. Now he spends his days coaching golf students from ages four to seventy and older. Students seek out the pro for everything from how to swing and avoid “whiffing” (missing the ball completely), to how to stop being a “worm burner” (i.e., someone who hits the ball so low to the ground that it burns up worms as it speeds along). These folks also are known as “groundhog killers”.

Beginners usually spend a lesson or two learning the basics before hitting the links. Part of the challenge of being a pro is to keep the eager novices off the course until they can play without damaging the turf, other golfers or themselves. Many courses have practice driving ranges where one can swing away at buckets of balls and dig divots clear to China if so inclined. Driving distance are measured with flags on the range or with a laser gun. Beginners learn about keeping score, as well as using different clubs and why.

Uribe estimates that sixty percent of his students are first timers who need to learn the basics such as how to choose the right club for the right situation, proper grip, stance, swing, etiquette etc. The other forty percent of his students constitute advanced golfers who want to kick some bad habits such as a poor swing or have a mean hook (as is the case with this writer).

So, if improving your golf game is part of your vacation plans, visit the pro shop, as most golf courses in Los Cabos can accommodate your needs.

A golf pro works to keep novices off the course until they can play without injuring the turf, other golfers or themselves.
