Wild On
Baja Off Road Adventure
By Matthew Dexter

Los Cabos offers a plethora of exciting off-road adventures. What better way to explore the desert, than flooring a Baja racecar towards a formidable jump, with your heart in your stomach? Adrenaline pumps relentlessly through your veins, as you fly airborne toward the dust below. Before you know it, you slam back down to earth like a feather with wheels, never even feeling the impact, and now more determined than ever to launch farther, and with more velocity, on your next lap.

This is the ecstatic racing sensation drivers experience when participating in Wide Open Baja adventures. Wide Open offers participants the exclusive opportunity to drive authentic Chenowth Magnum racecars at their private 1,500-acre racing ranch, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. Five miles of diverse, off-road terrain, provides the electrifying thrill ride of a lifetime in the same cars professionals use racing the famed Baja 1000.

This exceptional desert training course allows courageous visitors to push their vehicles to the limits, and perhaps a little bit beyond. The fundamental training makes this an especially entertaining activity, without all the dangerous elements usually associated with off-road racing.

No prior experience is required, however, all drivers must be of legal driving age and able to prove it with a valid driver’s license. Knowledge of how to use a stick shift is also required. Prices start at $250 U.S. per person for the seven-lap test drive that usually lasts less than two hours. If you want to go further, Wide Open also offers three-day roundtrip tours to Loreto, and seven-day tours down the entire Baja California Peninsula.

For those of us who are searching for something a little less audacious, Baja Bora offers off-road jeep tours through secluded scenic regions of Los Cabos. Baja Bora will take you on an exciting, high-speed journey through places in paradise that few people have ever seen. You will traverse effortlessly past isolated desert ranches, amid a wide array of diverse environments and majestic undeveloped land.

The tours of Baja Bora take guests on the secret roads less traveled, amid the deepest heart and soul of Baja California Sur. You will explore the scenic beauty in luxury, in comfortably air-conditioned custom Jeep Cherokees, where not even the dust can touch you. The surrounding mountains tower above and rush toward you, as your vehicle becomes one with nature. You will effortlessly, yet gently, brush the rustic tropical desert shrubbery aside, as if it were nothing but the wings of a butterfly.

These fully loaded, two passenger jeeps, provide everything you need, while you embrace nature and keep company with exotic wild animals. Baja Bora tours cost $130 U.S. per person for twenty miles, $285 U.S. per person for sixty miles, and $350 U.S. per person for five rapid laps around an off-road racetrack. Tours range from one to four hours. A valid driver’s license is required.

If sitting inside the comfort of a four-wheel drive vehicle sounds too confining, and you decide to evoke the inner spirit of your trail-blazing soul, consider a Baja Ride off-road motorcycle tour. These expertly guided motorcycle expeditions allow riders to explore the great outdoors, up close and personal, during an adventurous excursion through the mountainous desert terrain.

Riders are given extensive safety training prior to departure, and all the necessary safety equipment is provided. Both novice and expert motorcyclists will enjoy this two-wheel excursion through some of the most beautiful, undiscovered regions of Los Cabos.

Watch, as the rolling mountains cower and surrender to your path, as you descend past the summit and ride toward the sky. The shimmering, golden sun sinks gradually into the growing oceanic horizon, as you climb higher into the glowing desert. You will ride into your own world amid some of nature’s most stunning treasures.

A half-day Baja Ride tour lasts three hours and costs $175 U.S. per person. The full day tour costs $250 U.S. per person. Three- and four-day extended adventure vacation tours are available October through June.

Yet another way to venture through Baja’s back roads is by taking the three-hour La Zorra tour with Buggy Adventures. Taking off from a dry riverbed in Cabo San Lucas, you’ll meander through the old, secluded ranchos aboard a recreational vehicle known as a buggy. Buggy Adventures provides a fun experience for the whole family, with tours departing twice daily at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The cost is $90 U.S.
per buggy (2 persons).

Endeavor to discover the other side of Cabo. The conspicuous, physical beauty at the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula is magnificent. Yet, the treasure at the end of the road will beckon you farther, as you answer the call of the wild. In Los Cabos, the off-road adventures are limitless, and the infinite adrenaline-induced pleasures are enchantingly addictive.
