The colors of the water and the light on the striations of rock formations are dazzling. The eye-squinting sparkle of the sun on the water can’t help but make you smile. Nothing but you and the sound of paddle-splash. An occasional fellow glider may appear. Seals and dolphins are likely to ride along side, as if wanting to whisper “Isn’t this great!”
In the Cabo San Lucas Bay, sport-fishing boats are motoring their way out for the day. A looming cruise ship is still sleeping, but beginning to fidget. Soon the rest of the world will start its day in the bay and you won’t be so alone with your thoughts any longer. But while you are, look up at things that will inspire and humble you. The Land’s End arch and other rock formations absolutely tower above you, making you feel miniature. You stop awhile to appreciate the gentle sway you feel as the waves lap at the edge of the rocks. Pelicans may perch and sea lions may squawk, watching you with curiosity while you watch back. Nature’s gifts never cease to amaze.
Schools of tropical fish come to the surface, hoping for a little nibble of breakfast. You can see as they swim and dart and hop so close to you that they compete for your attention. Fish in these schools act like they’re in a classroom raising hands as if to say “Pick me, pick me!”
Alas, the bay comes alive with snorkeling boats departing out on tours, sightseers, jet skis, parasailers, swimmers, and partiers. The sun is getting high and the heat is getting stronger. The still water begins to raise its voice. In the distance, you see the beaches come alive, brightly colored umbrellas being set up and music sounding like just a hum from where you sit. Cabo becomes electric with activity, and it’s time to return to shore. The morning is turning into afternoon the rest of your day lies ahead. It may take a little spell to adjust from the peace of your sea level outing to the next part of your vacation. You’ll take that feeling of tranquility along for the day, perhaps for the rest of your vacation. If you crave more early morning kayaking, the dawn will be here again tomorrow.
