Up to Par - Your Complete Golf Guide

Los Cabos, the golf capital of Mexico, has seven championship courses with a half dozen more on the way.

Outstanding golf is a big reason to vacation or winter in Los Cabos, and for lovers of the game, the future has never looked better. Three new courses are underway in the San José del Cabo area: two at the Puerto Los Cabos Marina and Golf Resort east of town in La Playa, and a third at Club Campestre San José is set to open in February 2007. Cabo Pacifica’s first of two 18-hole courses is set to break ground, bringing golf to the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas.

Nicklaus’ new Signature Course at Cabo Pacifica just may rival his inimitable Cabo del Sol Ocean Course, rated among the top 100 courses in the world by Golf Magazine. Cabo Pacifica developer Ernesto Coppel has allocated prime beachfront to make way for a horizontal design featuring 13 oceanfront and oceanview holes. The first nine will be open for play in early 2008 and should be spectacular.

The Golden Bear is also making his mark at Puerto Los Cabos, using natural elevations to create a dramatic and challenging design. The first nine of 18 holes will open late this year, while work on nine holes of Greg Norman’s first course in México continues. The Nicklaus group has also designed the 18-hole course at Club Campestre, a 550-acre master-planned residential community.

Los Cabos courses will continue to experience heavy play as more and more sunseekers discover the area’s many charms. The Robert Trent Jones II classically-designed Cabo Real Championship Golf Course offers over 7,000-yards of lush landscape with Sea of Cortés views from every hole, three of them oceanfront. Cabo Real has hosted many international golf tournaments, including the 1996 and 1999 PGA Senior Slams. Nearby, Nicklaus’ El Dorado and Fazio’s Querencia, both highly coveted, are only open for play to each community’s property owners and their fortunate guests, and those looking to invest in these exclusive resorts.

Palmilla, near San José del Cabo, was the first Nicklaus design in Los Cabos. Considered the most forgiving championship golf in the area, 27 diverse holes wind through mountain, arroyo and oceanfront terrain. In San José del Cabo, Mayan Resorts’ ocean view 9-hole course gives players a chance to golf without breaking the bank. On the Cabo San Lucas side of the Tourist Corridor, Tom Weiskopf fans will find his 180° ocean view Desert Course at Cabo del Sol captivating, with dramatic bunkering. Two miles from town, The Dye Corporation-designed Cabo San Lucas Country Club is the only course with Land’s End views, and a stubborn
course record of 71.
