Does the expression “A glass a day keeps the doctor away” sound familiar? Sure, the original version refers to an apple, but the French, Italian, and even an entire community of health professionals and researchers agree that the same can be said for wine, specifically the red variety. Studies conducted at respected medical centers and colleges across the U.S., including U.C. Davis, Harvard, and the Mayo Clinic, have all reached the same findings: a four-ounce glass of red wine (for women) or two (for men) on a daily basis will improve general health. These findings, in addition to the pure enjoyment wine lovers get from sipping a glass of wine, could account for the innumerable wineries popping up from coast to coast across the U.S. and beyond, and explain why restaurant owners around the world are dramatically increasing their selections. Of course, it must be said that non-drinkers are not encouraged to take up the habit without consulting a doctor. For those who already enjoy it in moderation though, perhaps this article will be helpful.

Antioxidants present in the skin of the red grapes are responsible for decreasing the levels of low density lipoproteins (LDLs), also known as the “bad” cholesterol, by boosting high density lipoproteins (HDLs), the “good” cholesterol. Hence, lower blood pressure is achieved. So well-proved is this theory that even the American Diabetes Association has listed moderate red wine consumption as a possible suggestion for patients with elevated levels of HDL. In addition to improving cholesterol levels, overall immune system activity is boosted and cancer risks are lessened. The best reds to sip for maximum benefit are Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Petit Sirah and Pinot Noir. Much to the chagrin of white wine fans, the same health benefits have not been linked to these varieties, for the skin of green grapes, used to make white wine, is removed before the wine-making process begins.
Visiting Los Cabos is no reason to stop thinking about your health. There are plenty of fine options to help you enjoy that recommended daily dose of vino tinto. In San Jose Del Cabo, Voilá owner/Chef Roberto Valle offers guests wines from the US, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, France, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand and has painstakingly chosen those that best accompany the 14 entrees on his menu. La Bodega Steak & Wine House boasts 35 red wine labels, all optimally paired with your meal by Sergio De La Sierra, stored in La Bodega´s temperature-controlled cellar. Of wine lovers, De La Sierra says, “We know that the effort we put into understanding and appreciating wine adds an extra dimension to the basic daily routines of eating and drinking. It turns obligation into pleasure, a daily necessity into a celebration of life!” For visitors seeking the ultimate experience in the world of wines, head to Don Emiliano, where Sommelier Angel Salinas will impart his knowledge, as attained from The Court of Master Sommeliers. The only independent restaurant in Baja given Wine Spectator's 2008 Award of Excellence, Don Emiliano surely takes pride in its wines.

In Cabo San Lucas, allow the well-trained waiters at Casanova to share their extensive knowledge of the best wines from their collection, including an admirable list of labels from California, Italy, and Chile. Also in Cabo, Casa Rafael´s enlists the help of its co-owner/U.N.L.V. graduate Jacob Wood to guide customers toward the perfect selection for their meal. The newly-opened Los Cabos Winery is another great spot to hit while searching for just the right red to keep healthy. With a wine-tasting room, temperature and humidity- controlled barrel aging cave, and spacious wine lounge, this innovative establishment will surely be a great source of knowledge for wine lovers and novices, offering some delicious samples, selling them by the glass or bottle. An extensive variety of national and imported red and white wines can also be found at Tutto Bene, representing more wineries than anyone in the state of Baja California Sur. Located across from Cabo Dolphins on the marina, this gourmet food retailer offers wines individually or by the case.
So, before you order up that traditional margarita with your next meal in Los Cabos, consider doing something good for your health and enjoy a glass of the red stuff instead. Remember, moderation is the key.
