Los Cabos Magazine #37 - Summer 2014

Some seasons are better than others, however, and summer remains one of the best times to put a line in the local waters. Rising water temperatures are a big draw for feeder fish, which in turn attract unusually large numbers of game fish like blue, black, and striped marlin, as well as tuna, dorado, and wahoo. As an added bonus, off-season hotel rates make it easier to budget for charter boats. Fly Hooker (624-143-8271)—owned and operated by Los Cabos Magazine fishing expert George Landrum and his wife, Mary—is one of the top charter boat options for visiting anglers. Mona Lisa Charters (624-145-8160) also offers comfort and fish finding prowess courtesy of the captain and crew aboard its 35-foot Contender, “Mona Lisa del Mar I.” And if you get your hooks into something good, you can have the catch cooked and served at Sunset da Mona Lisa, the romantic Tourist Corridor restaurant known for its romantic atmosphere and spectacular Land’s End views. Larger fishing fleets translate to more choices, not only in terms of rates and availability but also when it comes to comfort and amenities. Silverados Sportfishing (624-144- 4903) is a popular choice among visiting anglers. The company has been fishing the local waters for more than 25 years, and its fleet includes a variety of fishing boats, ranging from a 23-foot panga to a 44-foot Uniflite with an airconditioned cabin and guest quarters. Pisces Sportfishing (624-143-1288) is one of the most reputable and more established fishing charter companies in Los Cabos. Not only does the company boast excellent catch rates but it has also been recognized by the International Game Fish Association with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Conservation and several of its captains have been honored with the Billfish Foundation Award for Most Striped Marlin Released Worldwide in a single year. After your day on the water with Pisces, you can have your catch prepared at Captain Tony’s (www.piscesgroupcabo.com), which is owned by the same business group. Pancho Panza Adventures (624-179-0313) is a familyowned and-operated activities company based in Cabo San Lucas. Pancho Panza offers several types of private tours, with the focus of each ranging from snorkeling and whale watching to old-fashioned sightseeing. Experienced and novice anglers should opt for the fourhour private sportfishing tour, which departs the Cabo San Lucas Marina at 6 a.m. and includes fishing tackle, crew, water, juice, and chips. Ride the Waves Prefer up-close-and-personal looks at the unique granite rock formations at Land’s End, the golden sand beaches that dot the Los Cabos coastline, or the secluded coves and inlets of islands off the coast of La Paz or Loreto? Slower-paced activities like kayaking and stand-up paddleboard surfing provide a perfect introduction to the natural wonders of Baja California Sur, as well as fascinating glimpses at the abundant marine life found in the Sea of Cortés. And traditional surfing, while a bit faster paced, likewise offers an intimate experience with the local waters, the ability to feel the pull of tides and currents, and paddle in for closer explorations of foreign shores. Adventures South Baja (624-105-9660) is a Cabo San Lucas-based agency that specializes in arranging activities and longer excursions for locals and visitors to Los Cabos. The company, which participates in the Los Cabos Magazine Prepaid Voucher Program, can help you select the best outfit for kayaking or paddleboarding. Kayaking is one way you can stay cool and get up close to the sea lion colony. 42 LOS CABOS MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2014 Francisco Estrada Silverados Sportfishing is a popular choice among visiting anglers.
