Sit Back & Relax

The evolution of Los Cabos spas

We are living in a digital age. Everything is changing, and the everyday increasingly looks like Tomorrow Land. As a rule, cars no longer require keys, books no longer come with pages, and there’s no need to whip out a wallet when you can pay for that Starbucks latte with an iPhone. We can rejoice then in our retreats to Los Cabos, which has long been a destination for city slickers seeking to unwind and, more importantly, unplug. But should we not want to turn off entirely, there are options here, too.

Forward-minded spas in Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and the Tourist Corridor that connects them have found ways to seamlessly incorporate into their treatment menus technology that allows clients to relax, indulge the senses, and leave looking—and feeling—rejuvenated. In this article, we will highlight some of our favorite spas and their decidedly high-tech services.

La Purísima Salón & Spa

Ventanas Residences’ on-site spa and salon is available not just to residents of the plush master-planned community but also to all of Los Cabos—locals and visitors alike. It’s a good thing, too, because this darling venue is an absolute treasure. Skilled estheticians and massage therapists work their magic inside smartly appointed rooms that celebrate the tree of life and the four elements. There are nods to the past—clear celebrations of the country’s rich history and traditions—as well as an embracing of modern approaches to health and wellness. Pair a hot stone massage with a special anticelulite or reducing treatment. Or you can upgrade a hydrating or calming facial with add-ons like the caviar and pearl anti-aging treatment. Traveling with family and want to treat the little ones? La Purísima also offers a kids’ menu, complete with mini manis, pedis, facials, and massages for children ages 4 to 12. For a special occasion, opt for the “Mommy & Me” package. La Purísima Salón & Spa, Ventanas Residences, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 131-5368, www.ventanasresidences.com.

Mar Adentro Spa & Wellness Clinic

It’s easy to talk the talk, but Mónica Díaz Rivera’s Mar Adentro Spa & Wellness Center has long walked the walk when it comes to holistic wellbeing. The aptly named center (its name means the “sea inside”) is located just outside the affluent Pedregal development, but its services are decidedly accessible. The prices are reasonable, and their value is obvious. Three times a week, you can pop in to shop for groceries at the on-site organic market. Stick around for breakfast or lunch at Penny Lane’s Cafe. And, come dinnertime, treat yourself to a “surprise” dinner at Casianos, the recently launched dinner concept. (Read more about Casianos in our dining guide, page 75.) The wellness center provides a wide array of services, ranging from low-tech to high-tech, that are meant to improve your internal and external wellbeing. The list of services and treatments is long and impressive: It includes but is not limited to IV therapy, HCG diets and cleanses, hydrocolon therapy, gastroenterology, lymphatic drain therapy, and more traditional spa treatments like Botox, facial rejuvenation, and anti-aging serums. This is what we like to call one-stop spa-ing. Mar Adentro Spa & Wellness Center, Camino del Colegio 225, just off Miguel Angel Herrera, Cabo San Lucas, (624) 172-0129, www.maradentrospa.com.

Spa Cielo Laser and Wellness Center

Home to what may very well be the best no-frills, full-body massage in all of Los Cabos, Spa Cielo Laser and Wellness Center also boasts one of the most robust and high-tech service menus. The website reads, “A true medical spa, Spa Cielo Laser and Wellness Center, blends art and science to make patients look [and] feel better than they ever thought possible without surgery.” This is no understatement. Begin your visit to Spa Cielo—which is located toward the southern end of San José del Cabo—with a VISIA Digital Complexion Analysis. A Space Age-looking image booth scans patients’ skin and records surface and subsurface conditions like wrinkles, spots, pores, unevenness, and photodamage. That reading allows Spa Cielo to design a specific-to-you treatment and skincare plan. Part of that treatment plan may include 3-D skin rejuvenation (yes, it is as cool as it sounds), laser genesis for pores and texture, the signature Heavenly-Hydration O2 Facial (the anti-aging treatment plumps lips, diminishes lines, and revitalizes), or even a nonsurgical facelift. But there are many, many more treatments, too, ranging from lash extensions, VersaSpa tans, and permanent makeup to Botox, nonsurgical muscle tightening, Lipotron body sculpting, and a hyperbaric oxygen tank. Aura Spa at Wyndham Cabo San Lucas Resort

Tucked away in the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas is Aura, the newly reopened spa at Wyndham Cabo San Lucas Resort. The marina-front location makes Aura an ideal spa destination for hotel guests and Los Cabos visitors. After a day of golf or fishing, sunbathing or shopping, retreat to the Cabo San Lucas Marina resort for utter relaxation and, maybe, some post-sun rejuvenation. The full-service spa offers, among its other treatments, massage therapy, body wraps and facials, aromatherapy, and nail services. More traditional treatments are modernized by the innovative incorporation of ingredients like lemon grass and tea tree for a detoxifying body wrap or coconut and lime for a reinvigorating manicure. Get a humidifying exfoliation with cocoa and vanilla, or opt for the equalizing facial (a must for those with oily skin).
