Cata Wine – Los Cabos Magazine #36

It is rare for a restaurant to master two distinct culinary styles, but this San José del Cabo standout is helmed by a rare talent. Chef Karina Alarcón trained in Reggio Calabria, and her custom pastas and sauces would be the envy of any Italian kitchen. Need proof? Try her palate-pleasing linguine Portofino with shrimp, clams, tomatoes, and basil in white wine sauce or her rich, hearty lasagna nazionale. The Durango, México, native also dishes up delicious Mexican specialties, including a memorable nopal Sierreño of prickly pear pads and steak ranchero topped with poblano sauce and accompanied by rice, beans, and guacamole. Alarcón’s dishes are ably complemented by a romantic setting that features comfortable couch-style seating, colorful lighting, burbling fountains, and evocative paintings from local artists. To kick off your visit in style, start with one of the bar’s creative, hand-crafted, cocktails. The martinis are superb, particularly the sweet-and-sour tamarindo. To finish in style, order postprandial coffees. The tableside preparation of flaming coffee drinks is a wonder to behold, and the perfect way to cap your Cata experience.
