La Panga Antigua Restaurant & Bar

To dine here is to not only taste some of the most impressive contemporary Mexican cuisine but also to witness a bit of San José del Cabo’s history. The restaurant hides just across the street from the historic Mission church behind aging hacienda doors that lead into what was once a 150-year-old mansion. A courtyard of multilevel terraces, alive with palm trees, woody vines and colorful bougainvillea, offers myriad alfresco dining options. We elect to sit in what is known as La Cava, a private room that is part of the original structure with adobe brick walls, a high ceiling with metal star lanterns offering twinkling light, and an antique breakfront with hand-painted murals. We are offered the specialty beverage of the restaurant, a refreshing mojito made with hibiscus. The evening’s spread includes ceviche made with scallops, mango, and cherry tomatoes; cheese ravioli with ricotta, Gouda, and spinach; smoked beet salad with prune vinaigrette and tuna; grilled rib eye with rosemary, red wine, and bacon-wrapped asparagus.
